Gracious Society

Posted by tyan (Singapore, Singapore) on 24 June 2008 in People & Portrait.

You might be slightly surprised to know that nobody ever gave up their seat for me in the course of both my pregnancies whenever i took a train. Maybe I didnt look lovable enough.

Then the lifts at train stations. There is this sign for the handicapped but apparently nobody heeds it and those who really need it have to wait till these able-bodied people has gone on the lifts and move on with their very important and busy schedules. I am queuing behind this wheelchair-bound man with 2 young kids in a stroller.

It is sad when a society decides not to care about the needy and handicapped.

Very keen illustration of the chronic self-absorption of our society. It is unfortunate that we aren't more aware of the needs of all, and not primarily our own.

Yes, it is a very sad state of affairs when people are only absorbed with themselves with nary a care for others in need. This pic should be sent to STOMP!

As mentioned by te comments above - a great glimpse into what our society is lacking - a little bit of selflessness!! I love the way you have chosen to use the focal black and white to really highlight the gent even more!! great work Ty1

My apologies for the sporadic visits things have been rather hectic this side of late! :)

A great use of selective colouring Tyan, it really emphasises this poor man's plight. There are some very selfish people in this world, which is very sad. A thought provoking shot Tyan.

This is a wonderful social statement, Tyan, of how selfish humans can be. It's awful!!!

nicely done photo!!!

it's sad isn't it? people don't give priority to the people who needs help. australia is surely a disabled person's heaven. they must be provided with equitable and dignified access as any other able bodied person.
