Waterplay at Science Centre

Posted by tyan (Singapore, Singapore) on 16 April 2009 in People & Portrait.

With Caleb falling sick so often, we feel rather wary exposing the boys to too much water play but I think I would deprive him of good fun if I restrict him too much. So we take risks sometimes and took them to the Science Centre last week. Here the boys are enjoying themselves, putting plastic balls on top of the water 'fountains' and seeing them roll and jump in mid air, and watching balls spiral into water 'windswirls'.

Thank you friends for all your kind advice on yesterday's post.:)

I brought the boys to see a pediatrician today. Caleb did not seem to get any better after he saw the general practitioner who prescribed him lung tonic. So today I went to the pediatrician and she told me that Caleb's bronchitis has worsened and there was a lot of phlegm as well as wheezing. No wonder I thought he looked breathless. You see, I can't even tell the symptoms sometimes. This is so frightening.

So poor Caleb had to be put on the neubiliser for the second time in his life. This time he did not scream and kick anymore,in fact he was quite calm, holding the smoke mask himself but i saw him tearing. Not sure if he was sad or if it was the smoke.

I started tearing too but tried not to let him see it in case he gets affected. That was such a painful process. I felt helpless, lonely and terribly worn out.The pediatrician has given him a new course of medication,as if to treat allergic rhinitis, but told me that she suspects that Caleb could be asthmatic.

Whether he is asthmatic we'll have to wait for this new course of medicine to work and see when he falls sick next. She even showed me an inhaler that Caleb may have to use if he really is asthmatic.I have never touched an inhaler in my whole life and i guess there is always this stigma of being asthmatic.

Meanwhile, Doc has ordered no swimming, no playground and no school for him until he gets well.

Let's just hope he doesnt get breathless or wheezing this week because Doc said I would then have to send him to hospital.

I hate hospitals.

My dear, I'm praying for you as I read this. Thanks for sharing so much on what you are going through. You are a strong mum and I know that the Lord will lead the way. Whatever you may have to go through, trust in the Lord.

Sometimes being a parent, one would have to go through stress, worry, anxiety etc...but God is faithful. You are never alone, remember that. I'm sure Caleb's situation will be sorted out and you will find the best way to care for him. I'll continue to pray for him.

Awww, Sweetie ... sometimes if it isn't one thing, it's six others. This is such a joyful photo and one that will bring good memories.
Now you're into a new phase and hopefully staying away from people he will get better quickly. I'll keep Caleb and you too, Tyan, in my prayers also ... lean on the One who ehlps us through the trials of life! xx

Don't worry too much. I'm sure Caleb will get better, being away from the school. You take care of yourself too.

I don't know if this will help but you may try 'talking' to St Gerard Majella, patron saint for mothers and children. He's a powerful saint and I believe you can trust in his intercession. As a Catholic, praying to saints give us an added comfort knowing that you've got a friend up there in heaven praying for you to God as well...

In the mean time, may God grant you the strength to take care of the kids. Take care and God bless!

At his age, Caleb is among kids who all carry the bugs we all catch and grow immunities to eventually, after repeated exposures and infections. Don't despair. At his age, I was diagnosed with bronchial asthma. But this has not slowed me down. I don't typically use an inhaler, unless I've got bronchitis, and that's about the extent of it. Since I had my tonsils removed when I was 18, I have seen a marked improvement. Also I use a maintenance dose of nasal spray, which keeps my sinuses reasonably dry. When they are dry, I am much less likely to get a bronchial infection, and I rarely get those. I also took allergy pills daily for just a couple of years, but no longer. My doctor told me that it was my allergies (to unidentified pollens, molds, dust) that would trigger off a bronchial reaction, so the key to me being well was to get ahead of the allergies. I suspect as Caleb grows older, his lungs will grow stronger. Keep letting him get plenty of play and exercise, and don't worry.
