Spooney Faces

Posted by tyan (Singapore, Singapore) on 5 August 2009 in Art & Design.

A few days ago, Caleb's kindy teacher called me early in the morning to say that the Principal requested my help with some artwork for the few hours that Caleb was in school for that day. Some days, i have to rush home to give Ian his nap and cook dinner while Caleb is in school so I can teach in the afternoons, but I try not to turn people down so i agreed. I tried to feel positive about the whole thing--that it was my way of showing support for the school, and involvement in Caleb's school life..The Principal gave me the hall all to myself and Ian. Ian played with the cars, tricycles, toy kitchens and all, which was the nice bit, while i drew faces on hundreds of spoons, for the K2 kids for National Day.

Husband's first reaction upon knowing what i did, was a frown, then a 'What do you think about this whole thing?' Husband was trying to hint that I could help if I were very free, had lots of help and not when I have another thousand and one things already to handle. Well i told him i tried to feel positive though i would have preferred to help in other ways like doing make up for kids during performances, or helping with costume designs, or decorating the stage, or reading stories to them, rather than draw faces on spoons, which made me feel a little stupid and very tired after that.

But today, the principal saw me again and asked if I was open to be a parent volunteer, let her know the days I am available and she can arrange for me to read to the children and stuff. Now that sounds really attractive to me, I think I'll enjoy doing that, provided they don't mind Ian tagging along. I think it'll be a great experience and who knows, when the boys are older, I might even make a career out of doing what I like in future!:)

What a fun picture!! The best part will be that your children will remember all the things you did to help out with there school and how much fun their mom was and the great spoons she made with the funny faces:)

You have given each spoon face its own personality; through these spoons, other things you've done, and that principal who seems to believe in you -- perhaps God is opening doors of opportunity for tyan's creative side to be nurtured and nurturing. What do you think about that?

Being a parent volunteer sounds good. My guess is that it's just a "trick" the Principal is using to get you to do free art work for them. How about getting you in as a part-timer and they can pay you for your time.

Can't they get their own teachers to do the drawings on the spoons? It's a real waste of your talent.

I agree with VF ... God may be opening doors for you for the future. It seems your talents are being recognized and that is the first step in the doorway of opportunity.
L. just doesn't want you taken advantage of, and for that he should be commended. :D xx
