Ocean World and learning Chinese

Posted by tyan (Singapore, Singapore) on 4 September 2009 in Art & Design.

We spent an afternoon changing the display board of a garden theme to an ocean world theme. The boys had fun pasting the seaweed, crabbos, jellyfish, submarine and sticker-fishes.

After 3 terms at Caleb's kindy,i concluded that their Chinese syllabus is really less than ideal. At the end of each term,i get back a thin booklet of about 6-7 worksheets, half of which were done as his homework,ie Caleb's mom helped him to read, colour and recognise the words! So i decided that I had to teach him some stuff myself. Other than reading Chinese books and helping him recognise words, we learn Chinese by learning Chinese nursery rhymes and simple poems, because they rhyme, have tunes to it, so easier to learn. The one we learnt last week is

妹妹背着洋娃娃
走到花园来看花
娃娃哭了叫妈妈
树上小鸟笑哈哈

It is amazing to me that Chinese or any Asian-based words can actually be read. They look to my Western eyes like art, pure and simple.

The teacher in you surfaces in so many areas; your boys will be walking, talking encyclopedias! :D
I agree with Glenn ... how does one find words in those 'drawings'?
You are marvelous to want to continue teaching them Chinese and this is a great image of demonstration.
