The things kids say

Posted by tyan (Singapore, Singapore) on 29 October 2009 in People & Portrait.

Children are a candid, uninhibited lot. Some things they say make you laugh, some make you frown, but usually they don't hide what they think or feel. Or maybe it's just Caleb? Some time ago, he told me this,

'Mummy, I don't like you.'

'Oh dear,why?'

'I like you if you wear pretty clothes.'

'Huh? That is very shallow thinking. You should like a person for his inner qualities, not how she looks on the outside'(As if he understands)

'But i will like you if you wear pretty clothes.'

So how? Time for plastic surgery and a makeover.

Then another time,he said,'I dont like papa.'

'Why?'

''Because he snores very loudly and I cannot close my eyes'

Another occasion i saw Caleb point his finger at a friend and said,'xx,your teeth is black!', and then another, he said,'yy,your teeth is yellow!'

I was totally embarrassed. I corrected him and told him that it will hurt people's feelings.

Then two days ago, he told me,'Mummy, I don't like zz'

'Why?' I asked

'Because she has no teeth and her mouth is smelly'

'You didnt tell her that, did you?'

Son shrugged his shoulders.

'Please don't tell her that, you will hurt her feelings.'

'Then I am not going to tell you things anymore'

I remember a mother telling me her 5-year-old son once shouted in the midst of a wedding procession that the bride was 'fat'. Everyone present heard it of course. I can totally empathise with her now.

What's that cone-like thing that dog owners make their dogs wear to shut them up?

It sounds to me that Caleb is observant. He is beginning to notice 'differences' ... something that could make a good lesson, Mom. :D
